About Us

Who We Are

We are the Small Farm with A Big Heart! We grow year-round local, rare, specialty & hard to find fungi, botanicals, fruits & vegetables.

We have an entire greenhouse dedicated to mushrooms because not only are they delicious to cook with, but they have a multitude of health benefits. If you want to learn more check out our “Morelliville Blog” on the homepage of our website.

In addition to all the bounty already mentioned we grow our own teas, coffees, edible flowers & herbs, which also have a wealth of health benefits.

Our property is a sanctuary, when visiting in person you will see unique livestock while meandering through the beautiful trails between the storefront, pond & animal pastures.

There is also Sir Lance A Lot our Highland Coo, where behind his bulky solid frame lies a surprising demeanor of gentleness and endless haircut possibilities.

Or Ollie, the Longhorn Cow, their stunning horns serve as a true work of art and grow ceaselessly throughout their lives, sometimes reaching upward of 10 feet across with magnificent and unique curvatures. Yet beneath the intimidating spread of ivory bone you will find the sweet character of a puppy just eager for treats and a nuzzle.

Then there are the cheeky goats, ambassadors of the barnyard. Boasting a blend of charm and peculiarity. Their soulful eyes, straight perfect teeth, small and pointed snout, offer a plethora of visual treats, not to mention they are infinitely entertaining.

Goats might not seem like the cuddliest animals, but researchers have found evidence that goats are as clever as dogs, and just as capable of building emotional relationships with humans as all the other domesticated animals we’ve let into our hearts. And trust me we always know when we have upset Sir Cody.

You will also find a colorful range of shy to very bold chickens & roosters, one very noble turkey called Theodore, and flock of extremely proud but inescapably lost ducks, who strut around the property as if they own it but for the life of them cannot find the pond.

We also are frequently visited by a giant blue Heron that catches the larger fish in our pond, it’s interesting to watch those 4 ½ foot giant birds hunting and consuming their meal.

You will hear before you spot the bullfrogs, and there are always lots of turtles of all sizes sunning around the pond. During the right seasons, if you look closely within the willow reeds, small trees, and bushes around the pond you are likely to spot birds’ nest with eggs or baby birds loudly chirping for their next feeding.

Colorful birds of all sizes are everywhere from the tiny hummingbird to the yellow warblers and Red-winged Blackbird.

If you are lucky, you will spy deer, a family of fox, mink, Fischer cats, coyotes, wild turkey or a big white and black skunk that roams around in the back pasture. Don’t worry, he doesn’t like hanging out and will quickly retreat to the tree line when he sees you.

Can’t make it to the farm? No worries, check out our live cam links here to watch the farm animals from your desktop or phone.

Or you can set up a consultation to speak with one of our holistic practitioners to discuss specific topics and get guidance or navigation through complex medical diagnosis’, procedures, or better help you understand your medications and lab work. Our practitioners can offer emotional, physical, and educational support from their immense medical backgrounds, but do not perform any medical tasks or make medical decisions. They can also help you advocate and communicate your needs and preferences to healthcare providers. Our practitioners do not replace the conventional medical care of doctors, PA, NPs, and other medical practitioners but rather offer complementary support.

Sustainability

We are located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of upstate NY, surrounded by world class vineyards and some of the best apple orchards in the world. We have sweeping views of Canandaigua Lake and as farmers in the Canandaigua Lake watershed area that brings great responsibility to our community current & future.

Today large-scale farming poses serious risks to our water sources & the air around us. Supporting small farmers supports lower carbon footprints, typically greener practices & better local economics.

That’s why we follow NY State Certified Organic Practices. Also, other than our community garden we practice no-till farming by using greenhouses and raised beds for growing our products. This minimizes the runoff of nitrates and other waste into the lake and other precious water sources.

Additional steps we take are 100% pickup & composting of all excess livestock waste. Water-soluble nutrients and other toxic contaminants from inadequate farm waste disposal systems often finds its way into waterways and groundwater systems, polluting drinking water and killing aquatic life. Morelliville Farms does all we can to support a sustainable future.

Whether we’re talking cattle, hogs or poultry, industrial livestock operations produce vast quantities of concentrated waste–a toxic concoction of feces, heavy metals, antibiotic and other drug residues, growth hormones, animal blood and harmful bacteria such as E. coli. Even moderately intensive livestock operations can produce as much manure as a small sized city.

We take our animal waste seriously. We use a pasture-based system, where manure is either naturally deposited as the livestock are grazed or moved across the land, or stored carefully over the winter period for targeted composting to be used as valuable fertilizer at appropriate periods later in the year.

We use holistic practices in raising our livestock and only resort to antibiotics when absolutely necessary to save an animal’s life or to prevent suffering. We do not use them preventatively. We do not use growth steroids, period.

Why Choose Us

The Role of Homesteads in Strengthening Local Food Systems

Homesteads like Morelliville Farms play a critical role in local food systems, reinforcing the foundation for community-based agriculture and sustainable food production. These small-scale operations typically encompass gardening, livestock rearing, and various forms of food preservation, contributing to the resilience and diversity of local food systems. By providing a degree of self-sufficiency to households and communities, homesteads can reduce dependence on large-scale, industrial food supply chains, which often prioritize efficiency over ecological and social values.

Homesteads and Local Food Security

Homesteads and Local Food Security Homesteads play an essential role in reinforcing food security and sovereignty, often becoming a keystone in the resilience of local food systems. Small-scale, family-run operations like ours not only provide nutritional produce but also serve as a buffer against climate-induced food insecurity. We provide:
  • A source of direct food access: Homesteads ensure a stable supply of fresh produce.
  • Nutritional diversity: A range of crops contributes to better nutrition for households.
  • Resilience to climate change: Diversified homestead farming systems can adapt to erratic weather patterns, offering more stability than monoculture systems.

Contribution to Local Economies

Homesteads like Morelliville Farms contribute tangibly to local economies by providing diverse market offerings from fresh produce to artisanal products. This local expenditure cycle fosters the multiplier effect, where each dollar spent generates additional economic activity within the community, thus expanding the local financial base.
  • Local Employment: Homesteads create jobs, not only on the farm but also in associated sectors such as local food processing and distribution.
  • Supply Chain Shortening: By reducing transportation needs, local supply chains diminish overall costs and carbon footprint, enhancing economic and environmental welfare.
Support Systems and Collective Action In times of need, disasters, or during a major shock event local homesteads often become the backbone of support systems within a community.
Avery & Bryan Bartell – Director of Sales & Media Content, Animal Behaviorist & Facilities Manager

Each day I handed out medications and went to more specialist but no one ever got “better.” Each day I would tell myself “Just get through today, tomorrow will be a better,” but there are only so many times you can tell yourself this. Especially when in reality the “better days” were nowhere to be seen.

I hope by sharing my family’s experiences and the knowledge we’ve gained we can help others and give people hope. With small steps you can gain back control over your life and health.

When you have a complex list of medical conditions it’s unlikely that you will find one remedy for them all. If you try to find a remedy for all your symptoms at once, you will be disappointed and feel overwhelmed. Therefore, it is best to decide which symptom is having the biggest detrimental effect on your health, and tackle that first.

For me, that was anxiety. Anxiety affected my ability to cope with everything in life including pain, fatigue, stress, and my weight. So that’s where I started.
